Figure-eight maze used in the Gupta et al. experiment. The rat always runs up the central stem and turns either left or right at the top of the maze. The black arrows indicate the direction of travel for every maze segment. The red line shows a shortcut trajectory consisting of a reversed sequence heading toward the central stem followed by a forward sequence heading away from it. Rats never actually experienced these shortcut trajectories; they were synthesized in the hippocampus.
