Promoting interdisciplinary participation

Interdisciplinary participation is crucial to the success of experiential media education. We have emphasized four principles in our classes to promote interdisciplinary participation: (a) adaptation to the needs and disciplinary background of each student (b) cross-disciplinary discourse during the teaching of the material (c) student agency - allowing students to propose their own assignments that examine knowledge relevant to their specific interest and (d) teamwork that includes members across disciplines in group projects. This approach is resulting in increased interdisciplinary participation in IGERT courses. For example, our Cognition and Perception for Hybrid Environments course included students from Computer Science and Engineering, Educational Technology, Psychology, and Media Arts and Sciences.
