Design, delivery and evaluation of SMALLab

The K-12 Embodied and Mediated Learning group has continued research into the design, delivery, and evaluation of a scalable, mixed-reality learning environment called SMALLab, conducting a number of recent studies on its efficacy for teaching and learning in real world contexts. Results show that using SMALLab was a highly effective experience for students that led to significantly higher achievement when compared against regular instructional approaches. Through a grant from the MacArthur Foundation, we have expanded our partnerships to include Parsons the New School for Design, the Institute for Play, and a 6th-12th school in NYC. We also secured an award from the Intel Foundation to expand our work and have collaborated with the Arizona Science Center, the region’s largest informal science educator. These awards have provided international visibility for our research efforts and our IGERT students. This year we have reached roughly 300 students, 20 teachers, 5800 informal learners
