Internships as interdisciplinary opportunities

Internships as Interdisciplinary Opportunities. Each IGERT trainee and associate participates in an internship that (s)he designs to fill gaps in personal interdisciplinary background. The primary criterion for the internship is that it expand the student’s intellectual horizons. For example, students with a background in social sciences are encouraged to pursue an internship in natural sciences, and vice versa. We also use the internship as an opportunity for students to gain experience in the international arena to provide a broader context for the thesis, which is often centered in Alaska.
