Achievement

IGERT trainees at Fisk University and Indiana University have also made a substantial commitment to developing outreach activities. Rose Perea at Fisk received a travel grant from the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) and made a poster presentation at the SACNAS 2012 conference in Seattle, 11-14 October 2012. There she recruited a student to the REU summer program organized at Fisk by co-PI Dr. Arnold Burger.

At Indiana University, trainees Virginia Smith and Paul Stonaha have participated in the Bloomington Area Science Outreach Program. They conducted a 50-minute presentation of concepts relevant to neutron scattering to a class of 20 third-grade students. They are in the process of developing a number of other demonstrations/activities for a K-12 target audience with a primary focus on elementary and middle school students. Smith has already used three of the activities in the Chemistry Open House at Indiana University in October 2012
