Winslow Hansen, M.S. IGERT Fellow, also was awarded an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship during his final year of work on the social and ecological implications of linked disturbance interactions. His papers evaluated the influence of an epidemic spruce bark beetle outbreak on the probability of subsequent wildfire on the Kenai Peninsula, south-central Alaska and how both of those disturbances affected property values in the wildland urban interface. He is continuing as a NSF Fellow while working toward his PhD at the U of Wisconsin Madison in the Zoology. His PhD work will explore the social-ecological implications of potential post-fire regime shifts in forest ecosystems as climate changes.
