Geothermal energy utilization in southern Idaho

IGERT students and affiliates Sean Hillson, Koenraad Beckers, John Mason and Holly Taylor conducted a study of geothermal energy utilization in southern Idaho. The quality of the geothermal resource was assessed using analysis of the geological and geophysical characteristics of the Idaho Snake River plain. Potential end-use applications for geothermal energy were identified based on current agricultural and industrial activity. The end-uses and the quality of the geothermal resource were compared using tools of spatially resolved GIS mapping to identify and recommend particularly attractive targets for new geothermal energy projects.
