Collective action and its impact on fish density in Brazil

ABS Trainees Caroline Arantes, Aby Sene-Harper, and Nicole Angeli are working together on a multidisciplinary collaboration that offers a novel analytical framework to measure collective action and its impact on fish density in the Lower Amazon of Brazil. Although the current study is focused on fishery resources, the goal of this study is to offer a method that is applicable to other types of common-pool resources. The research includes detailed biological and social science information. The authors developed an Ostrom Score approach to assess the degree of collective action within 74 communities and its correlation to fish density. This work addresses the need for more replicable statistical methods to examine the strength and direction of causal relationships in common-pool resource research. This paper was presented at the Ecological Integration Symposium and will be submitted for publication.
