Distinct microenvironments guide cell behavior

Rutgers IGERT Trainee, Gary Monteiro, has been working to manipulate the biological and biophysical interactions of cells (murine embryonic stem cells) with collagen by grafting matrix specific peptides and signaling molecule to fibrillar collagen. He is advised by Professor David Shreiber of Biomedical Engineering. Combining these techniques with previously developed microfluidic technologies in his lab, he has been able to create distinct microenvironments of matrix properties to guide cell behavior and differentiation within a 3D tissue equivalent. He has multiple publications relating to this work (see publication listings).
