New BA degree in digital culture

Our experience with the IGERT allowed us to develop and launch a new BA degree in digital culture. Heading into the second year of the degree this August, 250 undergraduates will be enrolled. We are currently in the development stage of a complimentary BS/MS degree in digital culture. The diversity of our IGERT education and research activities – spanning engineering, science, arts and design- as well as the fast evolution of the field of digital media, drove us to think out of the box in terms of educational structures. We concluded that rapidly changing, broadly interdisciplinary fields, like digital media, may require education structures that are based on meta-level learning outcomes, like proficiencies, rather than traditional course sequences using prerequisites. We developed a list of 20 key proficiencies for digital culture students. All courses in the BA and BS in digital culture use subsets of these proficiencies as their learning outcomes and prerequisites.
