Course provides formal scientific writing training

One IGERT class involved a presentation by Dr. Robert Brackenbury on effective oral and written presentation skills for the dissemination of scientific ideas through manuscripts, poster presentations, and grant proposals. This exposure was so inspiring to one trainee, Terri La Count, that she subsequently enrolled in his formal Scientific Writing course, taught at the UC College of Medicine, for additional in-depth instruction. Classwork included critically analyzing figures from published articles, composing poster templates, writing multiple manuscript sections for a draft article based on students’ current research, presenting orally to fellow classmates, discussing grant writing guidelines, and creating both personal resumes and recommendation letters. As a result, she is now more confident in her skills in those areas.
