Bi-weekly discussion group led by trainees

Another educational activity is the bi-weekly discussion group held on Wednesday evenings. These meetings are led by the trainees themselves and include trainee research seminars, presentations by invited faculty, and discussion of current literature. We promote these meetings throughout the university and encourage participation from the genomics community. This year, many of meetings have been used by the trainees to present their current research. The trainees find this valuable since they are able to practice their presentation skills and receive feedback in a relaxed setting from an interdisciplinary audience. Many of the meetings have also been used to discuss papers from invited speakers. The students read and discuss these papers in advance of the visiting speakers, and this consistently leads to great interactions between IGERT trainees and invited speakers.
