Patrick Johnson, an INCBN IGERT Trainee pursuing a PhD degree in Nanoscience and Microsystems, works on a project that involves the interface of biomolecular engineering and materials science in effort to make more biocompatible surfaces, materials, and devices. Such research demands a comprehensive understanding of the biology and the biomolecular science in order to understand the requirements and the behavior of living organisms such as yeast, bacterial, and mammalian cell lines. The material architectures used traditionally for the bio-synthetic interfaces are hazardous for living organisms. With the proper biochemical adjuncts, new features begin to arise that take advantage of both the biological and the synthetic systems.
