IGERT-MNM trainees take charge of their education

During the second year of IGERT-MNM, ten trainees and ten associate trainees at Norfolk State University, Cornell University and Purdue University, participated in four modular courses, meeting weekly using video conference. The syllabi and activities for the courses were prepared by four teams of trainees and associate trainees over the summer, and delivered in the fall and spring, under the supervision of the project director. Trainees evaluated each course using online surveys they prepared and delivered. Trainees’ leadership in the design, delivery and evaluation of the courses - Intellectual Property and Ethics, Technical Writing, Interdisciplinary Research, and Pedagogy – places them in the driver’s seat to obtain the training not provided by traditional graduate education, and provides a forum for the exercise of best teaching practices.
