Novel brain-machine interface to control flight developed

Brain-machine interface represents an emerging area of active investigation in neurorngineering. An important research achievement has been achieved in neural interfacing, one of the interdisciplinary intellectual thrust areas of the IGERT research program in the University of Minnesota. Integrating engineering with neuroscience and robotics, we have successfully developed a novel brain-machine interface to control the flight of a flying object based on solely the "thoughts" of human subjects. Through novel decoding techniques and training strategies, the research team led by Bin He, IGERT Principal Investigator and Director of Center for Neuroengineering, demonstrated this capability from noninvasive brain waves recorded over the scalp of human subjects. This represents a major advancement in brain-machine interface research and is the outcome of interdisciplinary research efforts.
