Trainee develops and intructs lab module

Kathryne Medeiros (ICE IGERT trainee, MCB) developed and co-instructed a hands-on lab module about patch clamp electrophysiology, a notoriously frustrating technique to master and one Kathryne has successfully implemented in her thesis research. This experience allowed her to introduce a difficult biophysical technique while practicing her ability to communicate to an interdisciplinary audience. Kathryne provided students from molecular & cellular biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, and polymer science & engineering with background lectures and practical advice before setting them loose to patch clamp cells that were expressing electrophysiological active ion channels. Lab modules aim to expose students to new research techniques and reinforce networking. As a direct result of this module, 20% of participants reported intent to apply a new research technique to thesis work and 40% reported that they would seek additional access to equipment/training within the ICE community.
