Sensation and Perception foundational course

Sensation and Perception is a foundational course taught to a group of interdisciplinary students in Psychology, Computer Science and Engineering. Students gain a solid background in key areas in vision and audition, emphasizing computational, psychophysical and neural aspects in both classical and cutting-edge research. Given the diverse backgrounds in math, psychophysical methods, and neural mechanisms, the teaching methods began by establishing a common background in modeling. Analogies were drawn between Fourier decomposition and vector spaces, and between convolution and neural receptive fields. Teaching methods featured discussion, broad coverage of principles and models, and the potential for research projects, based on the material covered in class, culminating in end-of-term original projects.
