Achievement

A lab-based neutron scattering (NS) course was developed and taught to 11 students from 4 disciplines. The course emphasized practical skills: 1) conceptual understanding of NS; 2) detailed understanding of commonly used spectrometers and the science that can be done on these; 3) problem-based-learning lab modules on the operation of the spectrometers; and 4) research focused final projects covering all aspects of NS-experiments. Included were writing beam time proposals, sample preparation and environment, conducting and analyzing experiments, and writing a manuscript on the outcomes. Homework assignments bridged the gap between conceptual understanding and practical application of the materials. A book was written detailing the basics of NS, the functioning of the spectrometers, and the planning and analysis of experiments. The emphasis on practical information and skills allows the book to be used as a reference guide for performing future experiments at national user facilities.
