Education Achievements

Visiting scholar brings expertise to faculty, trainees

The ESUR IGERT program benefited from the contributions of a visiting scholar, Dr. Paul Thompson, Endowed Professor of Philosophy, Agriculture, Food and Resource Economics and Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resource Studies at Michigan State University. Paul brought expertise in the areas of values and ethics in ecosystem service management into the curriculum, as interdisciplinary approaches require such knowledge. His appointment was supported by funding from the Portland State Institute of Sustainable Solutions and included the following roles: (1) advise core faculty on the integration of ethics and values material into core courses; (2) advise the core faculty on the development of a seminar on ethics in research; (3) consult with trainees and faculty on research project analyses; (4) offer lectures in core courses, and (5) present seminars and lectures on campus on interdisciplinary topics. Trainee and faculty evaluations of his contributions were uniformly high.
