Trainee Achievements

Trainees travel to France, South Africa, and China

As the first of our Trainees to travel abroad, three students have been outstanding pioneers in our IGERT’s globally-focused activities. Two Trainees, J. Kim and D. Scott, undertook formal IGERT-supported trips to France and South Africa, respectively. A third Trainee (S. Morath), having an opportunity for personal travel in China during a semester break, proactively worked with IGERT PI Lam to arrange to visit to one of our international colleagues in Hainan to learn more about internship opportunities there. In addition to the valuable specific outcomes for each of these Trainees personally, a broader impact is that their experiences have successfully alleviated apprehensions of Trainees and advisors that time abroad is not just an unwelcome interruption of research to meet programmatic requirements but can be a well-planned experience that can strengthen research for both Trainees and advisors.
