New knowledge

During the end-of-year interview, one trainee expressed that new knowledge he has developed through the IGERT program was identifying "many of the shortcomings associated with not including both disciplines in a research project." The factors that he attributed to forming this new knowledge were the regular meetings with his IGERT mentor and core research team and reading other discipline's research publications. With this new knowledge, he says that "rather than making assumptions and using aggregates and indexes, we [his research team] will be able to more precisely evaluate the benefits of the new process [of creating ammonia from biomass, water, air, and sunlight] and will not omit critical variables."
