Trainees explore other fields

Through our colloquium series and the spring poster showcase, trainees are given a number of opportunities to learn about significant research being done in other fields and to explore possibilities for their own work. Our colloquia cover a wide range of disciplines, so to prepare trainees, speakers are asked to provide a paper in advance of their talk. Trainees meet with the faculty host to discuss the paper, asking questions and developing a context. After the talk, trainees and associates meet privately with the speaker, then a smaller group of trainees have lunch with the speaker, talking informally. To supplement this exposure to work outside the university, we facilitate collaboration locally through the poster session. Trainees not only learn more about each other's work, they are also introduced to faculty and grad student researchers from across the university, inviting unexpected and productive collaborations.
