Another outstanding trainee is Marianyoly (Marian) Ortiz from the Soil, Water and Environmental Science department. Marian is studying the bacterial community structure in Kartchner Caverns, an Arizona State Park. The genomic tools she has learned as a trainee in the IGERT program have been instrumental in her research. She has published two papers this year and has two more in preparation. As an underrepresented minority, she has attended several workshops offered by the Institute for Teaching and Mentoring for increasing diversity in academia. These workshops provided an opportunity for her to meet other underrepresented Ph.D. students from across the country. Marian is also involved with the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).
