IGERT and REU programs support each other

The ERIE initiated a new Research Experience for Undergraduates program on June 1, 2010, supported by NSF. Although a stand-alone program (REU site), the Ecosystem Restoration through Interdisciplinary Exchange (ERIE) REU program is built around research projects that complement activity of the sister IGERT program. For many of the projects, current or former IGERT trainees will supervise aspects of the undergraduate research and/or provide mentoring. Eleven undergraduate students were supported in 2010, and twelve students will be supported in summer 2011. The REU activity is supporting an expanded scope for some IGERT doctoral projects, particularly those related to stream restoration, and has also provided additional experience for trainees in mentoring and multidisciplinary team dynamics.
