Media Training Class benefits field research

IGERT Trainees on the 2010 Greenland Field Seminar benefited from the Media Training Class they initiated that year. Hands-on technology experience, as well as training on how to tell a research story, interviewing techniques, effective oral and Powerpoint presentations, and use of web-based media, including Flickr, YouTube, Twitter, WordPress, and Facebook, provided the skills for more effective science communication to their colleagues as well as the general public and Greenlanders. Trainee skills were evident in the field as they strove to provide accurate, compelling, and sometimes entertaining records of their work in the field. A second cohort it now immersed in media training in anticipation of the 2011 Greenland Field Seminar. It also has grown into an independently developed seminar on visual literacy offered to the entire Dartmouth community.
