New techniques for films of graphene

IGERT Fellow Mark Levendorf has been developed new techniques for the rapidly growing high-quality, single-atom-thick films of graphene on large, copper-coated substrates. Using a custom-built rapid thermal processor, Levendorf tested a broad range of growth conditions inaccessible to standard chemical vapor deposition (CVD) furnaces, identifying conditions that reduce the time of the primary growth step by a factor of three while also enabling growth on much larger substrates. Levendorf is now collaborating with researchers at Columbia on the production of both n- and p-type graphene through in-situ controlled doping. The production of doped graphene would have broad ranging impact in the field by providing more control over the properties of graphene.
