Formal theory in cognitive science

A scientific goal of this IGERT is to advance the level of formal theory in cognitive science. An area in particular need of progress is formally relating (i) abstract hypotheses about internal mental representations and processes to (ii) experimental data. This was the topic of a newly-created regular seminar which combined faculty- and trainee-led discussion. In the majority of the seminar, trainees presented their work towards the specific goal of formalizing the formal-theory-to-experimental-data component of the research. This new venue also provided a structured setting in which trainees learn in depth about one another's research, something which trainees have been wanting for some time.
