Biogas development and use in WI

Trainees McCord, Stefanos, Plachinski produced two reports: "Got Gas: An Analysis of Wisconsin’s Biogas Opportunity," and “Substrate Use In Biogas Operations: An Underutilized Opportunity?” as consultants for Gary Radloff, the Policy Director of the Wisconsin Bioenergy Initiative (WBI). These reports are among the first to systematically examine the opportunities for biogas development and use in Wisconsin. In addition to potential energy and greenhouse gas reduction benefits, these reports show that Wisconsin biogas development offers livestock operations (including dairy farms) opportunities for managing waste nutrient load, odor control, and pathogen reduction, while offering food processing operations opportunities for solid and liquid waste management, cost savings, and odor control. These reports were included in the WBI’s “The Biogas Opportunity in Wisconsin,” a comprehensive review which made specific recommendations for further research and policy initiatives in the state.
