Undergrad wins first place at poster session

Ms. Anchal Jain received first place in the AIChE Undergraduate Student Poster Session, Food, Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology category at the 2010 AIChE Annual Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her poster was titled "Effect of Particle Size Distribution on Segregation in Vibrated Systems" and was a culmination of her undergraduate research work with an IGERT Trainee, Mr. Matthew Metzger and his advisor, Dr. Benjamin Glasser. The work focused on determining whether adding additional intermediate particles sizes to a segregating binary mixture reduces the overall extent of segregation. Numerical simulations and experimental evidence demonstrated that the tendency of the mixture to segregate was reduced by over two orders of magnitude with the addition of the intermediate particle sizes. IGERT supported Mr. Metzger while he mentored Ms. Jain throughout her two years of research with the Glasser group and throughout the process of writing, presenting and preparing her senior thesis.
