Trainees interact with seminar speakers

Trainee interaction with invited seminar speakers creates opportunities for trainees to become comfortable discussing research with unfamiliar and esteemed scientists. Trainees prepare for interactions with visiting researcher through organized journal club where chosen fellows present select research articles written by the visitor. Typically, one trainee contacts the visiting researcher to determine the papers that might be discussed. Our trainees communicated their appreciation (>60%) for interactions with visiting speakers. Following one interaction with a seminar speaker, one IGERT fellow wrote "Dr. Carlson accompanied trainees to the UCR botanical garden for a post-lunch intimate discussion on proteomics, sample preparation and protein precipitation in metabolite profiling. This conversation was influential to my own research."
