Organizations and their environmental footprint

To explore sustainability from a business perspective, Prof. Margaret Frey (Fiber Science) developed an educational module that explored how and why organizations decrease their environmental footprint. The module started with a brief history of the conflict between industry and the environment, the inception of the EPA, and the goals of the ISO-14001 standard. This discussion benefited from a case study on Competitive Environmental Practices from the Harvard Business School. The group then went on a tour of a new super-efficient power plant and got first-hand understanding of the strategies behind its design. To gain a better perspective on the challenges to certifying sustainability, they toured a local ISO-certified high-tech company and discussed the advantages of "going green" with the founder. The module closed with student analyses based on ISO-14001 methods.
