Modeling of ecological processes

A major area of interdisciplinary research is mathematical modeling of ecological processes. This work involves mathematicians (Thomann, Waymire, Bokil, Brugger, Manore, Johnson) ecologists (Betts, Borer, Jones, Swanson, Moore), and geoscientists (Haggerty, Lancaster, J Zarnetske, Frueh). Major problems being explored include identifying how much habitat is necessary for preservation of a species experiencing flow (as in a stream); the effects of stream network morphology on the distribution of habitat; climate change effects on habitat; the residence time distribution of materials (e.g., nitrogen, carbon) in a streambed; and effects of habitat configuration on the spread of vector-borne diseases.
