New tools for natural resource management

Deborah Wojcik, Gregory Parent, O.T. Thakadu and Narcisa Pricope are working in Botswana, Zambia, and Namibia developing new tools for natural resource management. Parent is investigating the economics of human livelihoods, Pricope is investigating impacts of climate change on livelihoods and Thakadu and Wojcik are investigating community structures and information flows. The interdisciplinary research outcome is the collaboration that has ensued as a result of their combined interest in effective resource management. Pricpoe, a geographer, has developed models that predict livelihood responses to climate change,, and Parent, an economist has developed models that quantify economic impacts. Thakadu and Wojcik, communication scientists, have developed models for effective communication of the results of the research to local populations. The synergism between these students would not have been possible without the interdisciplinary research foundation that the AM:w3 IGERT provided.
