Second advanced methods course led by IGERT faculty

During Spring 2010, a second "advanced methods course" was organized and lead by IGERT faculty in collaboration with a new senior programming position in bioinformatics. The course featured separate modules in the Python programming language, and discussion of bioinformatic approaches, and or utilities, useful in the dissection of microbial function from genomic data. The Python module included an independent student project using programming to solve a specific need in their own projects, which all involve working with genome sequence data. The code written and presented by each student (5) in a final presentation was quite extensive and several of the approaches developed by the students to solve bioinformatic problems in microbiology may be worthy of further development for publication.
