Reconstructing change in coral reef ecosystems

IGERT students and faculty from our research cluster on marine conservation and health have been working for the past year on a collaborative project reconstructing changes in coral reef ecosystem conditions in the Hawaiian archipelago. Working with leading researchers from a variety of disciplines, the team has coordinated the integration of archaeological, ethnographic, anecdotal, and modern ecological data into a historical ecology study. This integration has required the development of novel methods for data synthesis and analysis and has resulted in significant exposure of our IGERT students (& project participants) to different disciplinary methods, theories, and concepts. The project team will submit a co-authored manuscript for publication later this year and expect it to have a high impact in terms of its contribution to the literature as well as the research model employed to integrate disciplinary perspectives.
