Trainee designs all-optical switch

Next-generation photonic quantum information networks will require low loss, low noise, polarization preserving switches that are compatible with the 1.3-µ zero-dispersion fiber optic band. Such devices would be capable of encoding multiple-qubit quantum states onto a single photon, which in turn would enable quantum communications protocols that utilize high-dimensional spatio-temporal encodings. As a part opf his thesis work, IGERT graduate student Matt Hall has designed, constructed, and characterized an all-optical switch which meets each of the aforementioned requirements.
