New course creates common understanding

We taught a new course, Fundamentals of Sustainable Technology, which served as a leveling course to create common understanding and vocabulary among the students from the five participating departments. The class consisted for four modules, representing fundamental skills and concepts in (1) molecular biology, (2) materials science, (3) chemical engineering, and (4) sustainability. We included instructors from political science and a sustainability institute on campus to teach the sustainability module. By including these additional resources, we were able to reach outside the expected science expertise and broaden involvement in the program.
