Assessing the quality of tandem mass spectra

One team of our students develop a program to assess the quality of tandem mass spectra for the purposed of protein sequencing. They had to learn about a newly developed proteomics pipeline that allows for real-time sequencing of peptides from mixed samples that are then compared to a genome database for purposes of determining species identification and abundance. A major limiting step in this analysis is an automated and reliable method to assess the quality of the sequencing spectra. The IGERT students studied the pipeline and the parameters of mess spectrometry then wrote a novel code to address the problem. This code will undergo testing in May to determine its effectiveness.
