Trainees develop experience in second discipline

All IGERT trainees must complete a cluster of courses in a secondary discipline outside their home department and an interdisciplinary research project in their third year. Our first couple of cohorts of IGERT trainees have now proceeded this far in their programs and are developing substantive experience and relationships in a secondary discipline. Trainees are finding that the third-year project presents an opportunity to be creative in combining their interests. Some third-year projects have grown out of ideas first encountered in the IGERT Math Foundations course. Projects have been presented at external conferences and workshop, are leading to publications, and, in at least one case, is leading to spin-off projects involving other students and faculty.
