Bridging the Disciplinary Divide: The IGERT Experience

Achievement/Results

As part of the IGERT project commitment to cross-disciplinary efforts, IGERT faculty Nilsa Bosque-Perez and Lisette Waits organized the Panel Bridging the Disciplinary Divide: The IGERT Experience, for the International Conference on Enhancing Communication in Cross-Disciplinary Research, that was held in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, in October 2010. The panel brought together students and faculty from four IGERT projects across the country to discuss approaches to interdisciplinarity, communication and collaborative work, and the implementation challenges their programs have faced. Timothy A. Kohler, Professor of Anthropology from Washington State University; Thad Miller, doctoral candidate from Arizona State University; James Opaluch, professor of Environmental and Natural Resource Economics, University of Rhode Island; and Nilsa Bosque-Perez, Professor of Entomology University of Idaho shared their experiences on implementing successful IGERT projects with the audience.

Address Goals

The Panel brought together approximately 50 participants from around the world to discuss issues related to communication in cross-disciplinary research in academic environments. All University of Idaho IGERT trainees participated in the conference and attended this panel discussion.
