Research Notes for Land Managers

Achievement/Results

IGERT (Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship) student, Helen Bothwell from Northern Arizona University (NAU), served as the editor for the first of a series of publications to help link research and land management, by providing short summaries of key research in a readily accessible form. The focus of her efforts was a distillation of research done by NAU’s Cottonwood Ecology Research Group and preparation of a publication entitled “Research Notes for Land Managers” disseminated to land managers through the internet and some hard copy distribution. Additional editions of the publication will be developed by IGERT trainee, Jamie Lamit. Address Goals

The activity provides research highlights with succinct text and appropriate visuals so that the research can be easily assimilated by land managers who frequently do not have the time to read all of the scientific literature on a topic before they must take action. Also, data that are not published yet in scientific journals are also presented in abbreviated form if they are likely to be important to land managers. Publication of the “Research Notes” on the internet makes them accessible to the general public as well as an easily downloaded PDF because Adobe Acrobat Reader software is free. All NAU IGERT students complete an outreach internship where they bring scientific results obtained through university research to another audience, either schoolchildren, the general public, or in this case, land managers. The research was conducted with the support of a National Science Foundation Frontiers in Integrative Biological Research Award as well as an NSF Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship Award to Northern Arizona University.
